Common Signs of Cylinder Head Cover Issues

• Oil Leaks around the Top: The most common issue is oil seeping from the edges, usually indicating a hardened or cracked gasket, but sometimes a warped cover.

• Oil in Spark Plug Wells / Injector Ports: If you notice oil accumulating around the fuel injectors, the internal seals of the head cover may have failed.

• Strange Tapping Noises: A damaged or improperly seated cover can sometimes interfere with the valve train clearance, leading to abnormal engine noise.

• Excessive Dirt Buildup: Oil sweating from the cover attracts dust and debris, which can lead to overheating and potential fire hazards in extreme cases.

Expert Maintenance Tips

• Gasket Replacement: Whenever you remove the cylinder head cover for valve adjustments or injector service, always replace the gasket. Reusing an old gasket is the #1 cause of new leaks.

• Don't Overtighten: The 4HK1 head cover bolts have specific torque specs (usually around 8-12 Nm). Overtightening can crack the cover (especially if it's plastic/composite) or strip the threads in the cylinder head.
